Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016: Day 2.

I decided to travel light today, leaving my DSLR and assorted kit behind, and just took the Ricoh GR. On the one hand this simplifies things. One camera, fixed focal length, work with what you have. It’s unobtrusive and you often seem to be hardly noticed, if at all.

On the other hand it doesn’t feel like there’s much skill involved, and composition is kind of on the hoof, hit and run style rather than considered. For candid, close street portraits and street scenes generally that approach is fine. But not for more formal portraits. I felt limited today in that regard.

So really I think I need both the Ricoh for more traditional street photography, and the DSLR for more formal portraiture. I do like to take time to compose portraits like that. Which is different from candid street shots. And I don’t really want to be limited to one or the other.
